Honoring 10 Year Anniversary of Ali Kemp

The month of September means it's time for Ali Kemp Bandstand!  Every year Pi Phi hosts Ali Kemp Bandstand to honor Ali Kemp, a Kansas Beta sister we tragically lost in 2002.  Ali's legacy is remembered in The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation (T.A.K.E.), a self-defense program created by her father, Roger.  Mr. Kemp founded T.A.K.E. to prevent women from ever having to endure the same fate as Ali.  He was even honored by President Obama last year for his good acts and received the prestigious Citizen Medal!

Last Thursday the T.A.K.E. self-defense class came to the K-State Rec Center to teach us how to protect ourselves.   We had the opportunity to learn defense techniques that can be applied in scary real-world situations.  After the class, we all headed to the Wareham Opera House for a benefit concert featuring Manhattan's very own Jared Daniels Band! Pi Phi provided free Mr. Goodcents subs to all concert attendees.  Such a fun and touching night, remembering a sister and arming ourselves with self-defense!

Pi Phi Wins MudBowl for the 3rd Consecutive Year!

Congratulations to the women of Kansas Beta on winning MudBowl for the third year in a row! MudBowl is a philanthropy put on by Sigma Kappa sorority to benefit research for Alzheimer's Disease.  The women of K-State's sororities gathered early on the morning of Sept. 15th to compete in mud volleyball and support Sigma Kappa's mission. Again, congrats to our angels on playing hard and fighting for a cure for Alzheimer's!  We're looking forward to participating next year!

Welcome Home to the Happiest Place on Earth

Our new members!

Last Friday, Kansas Beta had the pleasure of welcoming our new member pledge class into the House of Pi! We couldn't be more thrilled to call these bright, beautiful and talented women our new sisters.  Bid night started off right on Todd Rd. when the seniors welcomed us home with open arms, angel wings, glitter and a dance party on the front lawn.  There's truly nothing better than celebrating the end of recruitment week by having a rave with your best friends.  We love you baby angels! Now prepare yourselves for the best year of your life as a Pi Phi at K-State :)
Welcome home

Angels Selected to Serve

Congratulations to PC '10 members Raigan Cook, Elizabeth Hughes and Lauren Henricks for being chosen to serve on the 2012 Up 'til Dawn Executive Board!

Up 'til Dawn is a nationwide student-led, student-run program held at more than 180 colleges in which college students raise funds and awareness for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  Opened in 1962 in Memphis, TN, St. Jude operates completely on donations and families receiving care are never required to pay.

Responsibilities of the Executive Board span the course of the academic year.   The main goal is to educate the college campus on the efforts of St. Jude, while raising money through a variety of activities including an all night letter-writing competition to solicit donations, and fundraising dinners.  All proceeds go toward the research hospital.  It's a wonderful way for students, faculty, and community members to come together and make St. Jude's mission possible.

We're so proud to have three Pi Phis volunteering their time for such an important cause!

Congratulations Angels!

"From the outside looking in, you can never understand it.
From the inside looking out, you can never explain it."
On Wednesday May 2nd, Kansas Beta hosted our senior farewell dinner in honor of our 34 seniors.  As we say goodbye to yet another pledge class, we wish them luck in the future and remind them of the memories they've made at 1819 Todd Rd.! Members read letters of encouragement and funny childhood stories from the parents of their senior pledge mom.  In addition, each senior received a framed picture of the House of Pi and a 'placemat' with pledge class pictures and room for younger members to sign.  We also compiled pictures to create a senior video of memories that will last a lifetime.  The girls shared stories, laughter, and tears as their four years spent as a Pi Beta Phi at K-State came to an end.  It is truly a special place, and will be forever in their hearts.  Congratulations PC '08!

Senior Date Party

Shark Week in August
Last Friday Pi Phi hosted our final date party of the spring 2012 semester.  It's a Kansas Beta tradition for seniors to plan their last date party, and this year they came up with the theme Calendar Girls! Members chose their favorite month and dressed up in costume accordingly.  Outfits ranged from March spring breakers to hunting season in November and K-State games in September.  The event was held in K-State's popular Aggieville District at Kat House Lounge.  It was a great way for members to have fun before preparing for finals week and leaving for summer!

Angels Encourage a Love for Reading in Elementary Schools

For 100 years Pi Beta Phi has focused its philanthropic efforts on literacy.  Kansas Beta hosts three philanthropies throughout each school year to benefit literacy and support Read. Lead. Achieve. and First Book.  In addition, we participate in a monthlong community service project in the spring semester called Champions Are Readers (CAR)  where members of Kansas Beta visit elementary schools in the Manhattan community.  This year we had a great time laughing, reading, and teaching 3rd graders from both Marlatt Elementary school and Bluemont Elementary school!  We're looking forward to our next project in 2013 and continuing to spread the importance of literacy to a new bunch of students.  Thank you to all the Pi Phis who made a difference in their lives!

"I love to read!"
